King Mohammed VI of Morocco congratulated his counterpart Felipe VI of Spain on the occasion of the swearing in on Tuesday of the Constitution by his daughter, Princess Leonor de Borbón, as heir to the crown of the Spanish kingdom.

In a message broadcast by the official MAP agency, the Alaouite monarch expresses his "warmest congratulations and best wishes" to Felipe VI and Princess Leonor, on the occasion of their 18th birthday and their swearing in of the Magna Carta.

Mohammed VI also reiterates his "deep pride" in the "bonds of solid friendship and mutual esteem" that unite the two monarchs and their respective royal families, as well as the "ancient and distinguished" relations between the two neighbouring kingdoms, which the two monarchs seek to "consolidate and enrich".

Leonor de Borbón took the oath of allegiance to the Spanish Constitution and loyalty to the King, her father Felipe VI, in a solemn act before the Cortes Generales, the Spanish Parliament, which legitimises her as a future queen, on Tuesday, her 18th birthday, the day she reaches the age of majority in Spain.

King Mohammed VI's congratulations come at a time of excellent diplomatic relations between Morocco and Spain, which were boosted by the Spanish government's recognition of the Moroccan proposal for Western Sahara as the 'most serious, credible and realistic' option for resolving the Sahrawi dispute, and which developed further with the High Level Meeting between the heads of government of the two nations, Aziz Akhannouch and Pedro Sánchez, in Rabat in February 2023.
