The death toll in the Gaza Strip now exceeds 10,000, one month into the war between Israel and the enclave's Islamist militias, led by Hamas.

The number of confirmed dead so far is 10,022 - more than 70% are women, children and the elderly - as well as more than 25,400 wounded, according to the latest figures released by the Gaza Ministry of Health.

Among the fatalities, 4,104 are children - one child dies every ten minutes - and 2,641 are women, ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra told a press conference.

The ministry said 252 people have been killed in the past 24 hours in Israeli bombardment of the enclave in 18 attacks, which hit several hospitals.

At least eight people were killed in attacks on a hospital complex in Gaza City, which houses the Strip's only psychiatric hospital, an ophthalmology centre and the Rantisi paediatric hospital.

The ministry recalled that 192 medical staff have been killed since the war began a month ago and that 32 ambulances were destroyed, while 16 hospitals are now out of service.

The Hamas-controlled ministry also accused Israel of targeting bakeries where people queue to buy food, further aggravating the food crisis.

The war between Israel and Gaza militias marks one month today after Hamas's brutal attack on Israeli soil on 7 October, which left more than 1,400 people dead and 240 kidnapped.
