Morocco and Germany seek to strengthen security cooperation to fight terrorism and organised cross-border crime

Morocco's Director General of National Security (DGSN) and Territorial Surveillance (DGST), Abdellatif Hammouchi, visited Germany to discuss bilateral security cooperation and review the results of police cooperation. Both countries affirmed their readiness to continue security cooperation during Abdellatif Hammouchi's official visit to Germany from 24 to 26 June.

During the visit, which took place at Germany's request, Hammouchi met with officials from the German Federal Police and the Federal Criminal Police Office to discuss measures to strengthen bilateral security cooperation.

Hammouchi held special working meetings with Federal Police President Dieter Romann and Criminal Police President Holger Munch, according to an official statement. The DGSN statement also emphasised that the purpose of the visit is to demonstrate the importance of bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

The visit was part of Morocco's active preparations to host global and continental sporting and security events, starting with the 93rd Interpol General Assembly in Marrakech next year, to be followed by the African Cup of Nations in 2025 and the World Cup in 2030, which Morocco is involved in organising alongside Spain and Portugal.

The topics of the talks were the fight against terrorism, organised crime and security at major sporting events. Hammouchi and his German counterparts discussed the results of police cooperation, as well as security issues affecting the regional level in Europe and internationally.

Morocco prepares for World Cup 2030

During the visit, cooperation in the field of sports security, the exchange of expertise and technical support were discussed. The arrival of the 2030 World Cup in Morocco has revolutionised the country's security. The efforts made by all security institutions in the North African country are aimed at sporting events.

When we talk about the World Cup, we are referring to the most popular sporting event in the world. Declared a high-risk event, security will be at its highest level at each of the matches. Moreover, the World Cup is the second best sporting event in the world, only behind the Olympic Games, the football World Cup is an event that attracts more and more people, even though it is a competition that takes place every four years.

The football party is open to everyone, including those who want to commit crimes and put the security of Morocco, Spain or Portugal on the ropes. Attracting millions of people in just 30 days of competition is a major challenge for which Moroccan security has already begun to plan.

In recent years, Morocco has become a lauded host of global events, from major sporting competitions and high-level political dialogues to important security meetings. Thanks to this experience, Morocco has earned respect for its organisational potential.

Many countries now count on the North African kingdom to contribute to the security of various international events, including its involvement in ensuring the security of the last 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Recently, France asked Morocco for assistance in relation to the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics.

Abdellatif Hammouchi's visit to Germany is an example of the importance of international security cooperation. The increased preparedness of Moroccan security agencies for the organisation of global and continental security and sporting events reflects the strong commitment of the DGSN and DGST to international efforts to neutralise risks and threats affecting the regional and international security of both countries.
