Morocco renews its commitment to the Palestinian cause and joint Arab action
Morocco remains committed to supporting priority issues for Arab countries and those aimed at achieving the objectives of joint Arab action, said Mohamed Ait Ouali, Morocco's ambassador to Egypt and permanent representative to the League of Arab States, on 13 February in Cairo.
In his speech during the 115th ministerial session of the Economic and Social Council of the League of Arab States, Ait Ouali emphasised Morocco's commitment to promoting sustainable social and economic development to ensure the prosperity of the peoples of the Arab region and to fulfil their aspirations.
Morocco is participating in this session with a delegation that includes its ambassador to Cairo and permanent representative to the League of Arab States, as well as officials from the ministries of Economy and Finance, and Industry and Trade.
Commitment to the Palestinian issue
Morocco has also reaffirmed its position in favour of protecting the right of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Ait Ouali, on the other hand, emphasised the need to respect the ceasefire agreement and move on to the next stages, in a way that favours and facilitates the reconstruction of Gaza, as well as supporting efforts aimed at preserving the holy sites of the city of Jerusalem.
In this sense, the Moroccan ambassador recalled Morocco's support, which will consist of sustaining small and medium-sized projects in Palestine, which will contribute to the reactivation and development of economic activities and will allow the reestablishment of their productive capacities, through the creation of employment opportunities and the improvement of family incomes.
Ait Ouali also highlighted the announcement made on 10 February by the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organisation regarding the success of the mediation carried out by King Mohammed VI to resolve the crisis of the Palestinian funds frozen by Israel.
Morocco has intensified its humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian population, particularly in Gaza. The Al-Quds Committee, chaired by the Moroccan sovereign, coordinated the delivery of medical and humanitarian aid, facilitated by an unprecedented land corridor that allows aid to reach civilian populations despite security difficulties.
It should be remembered that, at the 33rd Summit of the League of Arab States, organised in May last year, King Mohammed VI reaffirmed Morocco's constant support for the Palestinian people in the recovery of their legitimate rights and the establishment of their independent and sovereign state.
‘We reaffirm our constant support for the brotherly Palestinian people to recover their legitimate rights and establish their independent and sovereign state, within the borders of 4 June 1967, with East Al-Quds [Jerusalem] as its capital, on the basis of the two-state solution,’ the monarch said in his speech, read by the head of the Moroccan government, Aziz Akhannouch.
The declaration reaffirmed Morocco's unwavering commitment to the Palestinian cause, placing it at the centre of its priorities in the Middle East region, as well as being one of the pillars of its foreign policy.
Support for the economic revival of Yemen
The Moroccan ambassador also emphasised, from Cairo, Morocco's support for infrastructure projects in the Republic of Yemen, with the aim of reactivating its economy and promoting its development after years of armed conflict.
Similarly, he welcomed the efforts made by the institutions of Joint Arab Action and the Ministerial Councils specialising in economic and social areas, emphasising that the meeting is a timely occasion to address the multiple economic, social and development issues of interest to the populations of this region.
In particular, there is the major concern of achieving the development of the great Arab Free Trade Zone, as well as the implementation of the executive plan of the Arab strategy for water security in the Arab region, aimed at guaranteeing the demands of stable food security. To this is also added the application of the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan.
This solidarity with the Yemeni state was reflected in the sixth session of the Morocco-Yemen Joint Commission, chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and the Yemeni Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Shayea Mohsen Al-Zindani. Last January, Morocco and Yemen reaffirmed their desire to develop cooperation in various spheres.
On that occasion, Bourita praised the deep-rooted fraternal relations that unite the two countries and the two brotherly peoples, underlining Morocco's desire to give greater impetus to these relations in various fields and to broader horizons, as well as to the exchange of views on Arab, regional and international issues of common interest.
Both parties examined the possibilities available to each country and the importance of making the most of them for the common good of the two peoples. For his part, the Yemeni minister expressed his pride at visiting his second country, Morocco, reaffirming Yemen's willingness to explore all means of strengthening, developing and diversifying bilateral cooperation.
On behalf of his country, Al-Zindani also congratulated Morocco for hosting the 2030 Football World Cup, together with Spain and Portugal, considering it an ‘honour for all Arab countries’.
