Marruecos destaca la posición positiva y constructiva de Alemania
Morocco has taken a very positive view of the favourable announcements made by Germany with a view to returning to constructive positions between the two countries, the Kingdom's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.
Through this strengthening of ties, a constructive bilateral relationship between two very important countries on the international level, one in North Africa and the other in the heart of Europe, is being restored. This latest diplomatic move represents a return to normal relations between the Alawi kingdom and the German country after a political situation that was certainly complicated.
The Kingdom, as indicated by its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, hopes that this new position will be accompanied by action to reflect a new situation between the two nations and determine a new beginning in the relationship between the two countries based on the principles of clarity and mutual respect.
These announcements make it possible to foresee a resumption of bilateral cooperation and the return to normal work of the diplomatic representations of the two countries in Rabat and Berlin, the Moroccan Foreign Ministry stressed in a statement, as reported by the official Moroccan news agency MAP.
The gesture of acceptance of the political rapprochement expressed by Morocco follows Germany's determination to support the Moroccan formula on the Western Sahara issue, based on a system of broad regional autonomy under Alawite sovereignty. This proposal has received significant international support since the previous US administration of Donald Trump recognised the Moroccan sovereignty of the Sahara, and after major nations such as the United States and the United Arab Emirates announced their decision to open consulates in strategic enclaves such as Dakhla.
The step taken by Germany brought about a great rapprochement between Rabat and Berlin, which has now been reinforced by the Moroccan Foreign Ministry's response, appreciating the "positive announcements and constructive positions of the new German government", as reported by the MAP agency.
The new German government led by Olaf Scholz has made a change of direction with regard to relations with Morocco, demonstrating its intention to strengthen ties and rebuild good relations between the two nations, something it showed by backing the initiative proposed by the Alawi kingdom with regard to Western Sahara.
The German Foreign Ministry stressed that Morocco's formula for Western Sahara is key to settling the regional issue. This was announced by the Ministry represented by Annalena Baerbock in a press release, in which it also expressed its support for the personal envoy of the UN Secretary General for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, appointed last November.
These diplomatic moves come close to settling an awkward situation after Morocco summoned its ambassador to Berlin in response to "hostile acts" stemming from the fact that several German leaders questioned Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara at the time.
