Mozambique's President in Algiers without a precise programme

The Algiers regime, at odds with its neighbours and the so-called brotherly Arab states, or directly at cold war, as in the case of Morocco, is turning its attention to distant African countries. 

Thus, after inviting the presidents of Sudan and Sierra Leone, it is now the turn of the Mozambican head of state to come to Algiers for a friendly working visit. It is a visit without an agenda, apart from the ship's formula of "strengthening the ties of friendship and fraternity between the two countries", as the press release of the President of the Republic emphasises. 

It should be noted that economic and commercial exchanges between the two countries are at a standstill, despite the existence of a memorandum of understanding signed in 2007. The only point that unites this gas-producing country is the recognition of the ghostly Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic since its proclamation in 1976. 

Mozambique is also, along with Algeria and Sierra Leone, a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. 

On his arrival in Algiers on Wednesday 28 February, the President of Mozambique was officially received by President Tebboune the following day, Thursday 29 February, at the seat of the Presidency of the Republic. After laying a wreath before the commemorative stele at the Shrine of the Martyrs of Algiers, where he observed a minute's silence in memory of the martyrs of the glorious War of National Liberation, he also visited the National Museum of the Moudjahid, where he received explanations on the different stages of Algerian history, in particular that of the glorious War of National Liberation. He also took the opportunity to look out over the Bay of Algiers from the Martyrs' Sanctuary, which offers a panoramic view of the capital. During the visit, he was accompanied by the Minister of Moudjahidin and Vindicators, Laid Rebiga.

This is the first time that a head of state has landed and visited the Martyrs' Shrine and the Liberation War Museum without his arrival being announced by the media and without being received by the president of the host country. 

This visit comes on the eve of President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi's participation in the work of the 7th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Forum of Gas Exporting Countries (FPEG) to be held from 29 February to 2 March in Algiers.

Although it was scheduled to open this morning in Algiers, the 7th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) has not been mentioned in the Algerian media. At the time of writing, the arrival of any participating head of state or government has not been announced. However, for several days now, the Algerian press has been constantly presenting the summit as "a major event that will consolidate Algeria's role on the international stage". It is very likely that the meeting of heads of state and government will take place on Saturday 2 March. Today and tomorrow, 1 March, will be devoted to meetings of experts who are to prepare the text to be adopted by the heads of state.
