The Permanent Political Committee (CPP) of the Saharawi Movement for Peace (MSP) held on Saturday a meeting to assess the situation after the first tour of the UN envoy for Western Sahara.

The members of the Commission examined the evolution of the efforts to extend the deployment of the structures of the MSP both outside and inside the territory, expressing their satisfaction with the results achieved despite the adverse conditions resulting from the pandemic.

In addressing external work, the CPP highlighted the importance of contacts, meetings and communications with various official and non-governmental institutions in countries with influence on the Western Sahara issue.

With regard to the situation on the ground following the recent tour of the UN Secretary General's personal envoy, Staffan de Mistura, the CPP expressed its concern at the continuing instability and regretted the loss of human lives during this period.

Examining the difficult conditions in which the Saharawi people are living after half a century of suffering and exile, and in view of the lack of prospects and the growing uncertainty and despair in the refugee camps, the CPP called for the convening of a Saharawi dialogue with the participation of all political currents and sensibilities, as well as representatives of civil society as a whole, including elected officials and descendants of the notables of the Sahara Assembly. This dialogue should be held in a neutral country (Mauritania or Spain) and its aim is none other than to open a sincere debate on the serious moment and the dangers looming over our future and to be able to agree on reasonable, objective and viable formulas and strategies so as not to waste the opportunity offered by the UN to achieve a just and lasting compromise solution under guarantees from the international community.

Finally, the CPP reiterated its support and the willingness of the MSP to contribute to the efforts of Staffan de Mistura to enforce, as soon as possible, the ceasefire and to resume the political process interrupted in Geneva in May 2019. He also welcomed the intention of the governments of Spain and the United States to join forces in favour of a peaceful solution to the problem of Western Sahara.
