The head of the Presidential Leadership Council, which has held the presidency of Yemen's internationally recognised government since April, Rashad al-Alimi, will meet with US President Joe Biden on Saturday during his visit to Saudi Arabia, Yemeni officials said today.

Al Alimi, who heads the executive body to which former President Abdo Rabu Mansur Hadi delegated his powers three months ago, left Aden, the interim capital of Yemen's legitimate government, on Thursday for Saudi Arabia for "high-level talks" with Biden in Jeddah, Yemen's official Saba news agency said.

Yemeni government sources confirmed to Efe the meeting, held within the framework of the Arab-US summit in the Saudi city, and explained that it will take place behind closed doors and is scheduled to last 20 minutes.

The meeting will address "opportunities to extend the truce" in the Yemen war that came into effect in April and "to achieve peace and stability in the country", according to Saba.

The two leaders will also discuss "efforts to get the Iranian regime-backed Houthi militias to treat seriously the opportunity to resurrect the political process in Yemen and put an end to the greatest human suffering in the world," the agency added.

Yemen has been suffering a devastating civil war since Houthi rebels, a Shia movement, conquered large parts of the country, including the capital, Sana'a, in late 2014, and months later an international coalition led by Saudi Arabia intervened in the conflict in support of the government.

The US backed the Saudi intervention for several years until early last year, after Biden became president, when it announced that it would stop supporting the Arab country's offensive actions in Yemen.
