Russia's Rosatom atomic corporation has received a licence in Egypt to build the fourth reactor at the Dabaa nuclear power plant, the first in the country's history, the company said today.

"Rosatom received the licence for the construction of the fourth power unit of Egypt's Al Dabaa nuclear power plant," located in the northwest of the country, the Russian corporation said in a statement on its official Telegram account.

The permit was issued by the Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority (ENRRA), which inspected the site between 30 July and 2 August to check the state of readiness for the start of work.

"As a result, the safety of the construction of the fourth power unit was confirmed and no damage to the environment was detected," Rosatom stressed.

Alexei Kononenko, vice-president of the nuclear power plant and director of the power plant construction project, noted that the construction process is proceeding according to schedule.

"This is an important step that brings us closer to the key event: the pouring of the first concrete and the start of construction of the fourth power unit of Egypt's first nuclear power plant," he stressed.

The permit for the construction of the first reactor was issued in June 2022, the second in October 2022 and the third in March 2023.
