The Senate commemorates the 59th anniversary of the “Munich Contubernio” on 7 June
On Monday 7 June, the Senate Palace will host an event to commemorate the 59th anniversary of the 1962 “Munich Contubernio”. The President of the Senate, Pilar Llop, the Secretary of State for the European Union, Juan González Barba, and the President of the Spanish Federal Council of the European Movement (CFEME), Francisco Aldecoa, will lead the event.
The conference will begin at 10.30 a.m. and will conclude at around 2 p.m. The first round table is entitled "Civil society at the heart of Spanish and European democracy", and will be moderated by the Vice-President of the Spanish Federal Council of the European Movement, Eugenio Nasarre, with the presence of the children of those attending the conference, such as Miguel Satrústegui, Professor, Cristina Ruiz-Navarro, Lawyer, José María Pons, Spanish Ambassador, Carlos Barros de Lis, Lawyer, and, telematically, Laura Baeza, Ambassador of the European Union.
The second round table, entitled "From the Council of Europe to the Future of Europe: lessons from the past for the Conference on the Future of Europe", moderated by Victoria Rodríguez, professor of International Relations and vice-secretary of the CFEME, will be attended by two of those who attended the Munich Agreement 59 years ago: Carlos María Bru, former president of the CFEME, and Xabier Echeberria, who will participate telematically from Ollarzu.
Other speakers include José María Gil-Robles, former President of the European Parliament, CFEME and International European Movement, who will also speak telematically; Leyre Arrieta, professor at the University of Deusto; and Ricardo Gómez Laorga, historian and member of the CFEME Youth Committee.
The European Movement, the organiser of the event, intends to begin to highlight the value of the Contubernio in the run-up to the 60th anniversary, where a series of activities will be held to commemorate this event, which was a "meeting place" for democratic Spaniards. The aim is to remember that Europe and the struggle for democracy were the fundamental vectors of this meeting.
The aim of this commemoration, held in the midst of the launch of the Conference on the Future of Europe, which was inaugurated almost a month ago and will hold its first plenary session on 18 and 19 June, is to highlight the importance of organised civil society in the struggle for democracy in Spain and for the deepening of the European project. The main political forces that support the European Movement continue to be united around the deepening of the European Union.
