In a video released by the Ministry of the Interior, its head, Fernando Grande Marlaska, stated that the support received by Spain from Morocco came at the time when it was most needed and was of a crucial nature. The minister was joined by representatives of local authorities, elected officials, members of the Armed Forces, National Police and Civil Defence.

The minister highlighted the exceptional commitment of the Moroccan teams sent by the King of Morocco, Mohammed VI. He also referred to the ‘extraordinary coordination between Moroccan and Spanish commanders.’ The video shows Marlaska thanking the support received and said that the efforts will be remembered by Spaniards with gratitude.

‘Today we bid an emotional farewell to our Moroccan friends who have accompanied us in Valencia during these difficult weeks. Their hard work, commitment and generosity have left a deep impact on the hearts of Spaniards,’ the minister said.

Marlaska highlighted the 103 Moroccan troops who repaired more than 350 kilometres of damaged networks, unblocked more than 5,000 sewers, swept more than 30 kilometres of streets, and collaborated in the repair, rehabilitation, cleaning, and disinfection of more than 200 garages. The Moroccan envoys provided 37 pumping trucks, which were especially useful in the most remote affected villages.

‘Since the arrival of the Moroccan troops in mid-November, the 103 troops have done an exemplary job. You have worked tirelessly to free more than 350 kilometres of sewage network, to clean more than 200 garages, freeing them of more than 200 tonnes of mud,’ added Marlaska.

Also speaking at the presentation was the Director General of Civil Protection, Virginia Barcones, who expressed her deepest thanks to King Mohammed VI for his support, which she said was ‘decisive and effective.’ ‘These gestures of solidarity between Morocco and Spain are the fruit of the relations that exist between the two countries,’ she concluded.

After the end of the video, a ceremony was held to present certificates to all those who helped save as many lives as possible during the worst catastrophe of the last 25 years in Spain. These certificates recognised the help given to the reconstruction and support to the affected population.
