The Republic of Suriname reaffirmed on Thursday its continued support for Morocco's territorial integrity and sovereignty over its entire national territory, including the Sahara region, as well as its full support for the Moroccan autonomy plan as the only credible, serious, and realistic basis for reaching a solution to this issue.

This position was expressed in a joint statement signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade, and Cooperation of the Republic of Suriname, Melvin Buffa, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita, following a meeting held in Rabat, as part of the Surinamese minister's working visit to Morocco.

The joint statement explained that the Surinamese diplomat "noted with great satisfaction and commended the adoption by the Security Council of the historic Resolution 2797 of October 31, 2025, which enshrines, within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty, the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco as the only serious, credible, and sustainable basis for achieving a political solution to this regional dispute.“

The statement also welcomed ”the growing international consensus and momentum led by King Mohammed VI in support of the autonomy plan presented by the Kingdom of Morocco."

Furthermore, both ministers encouraged the signing of a memorandum of understanding on cooperation between sister cities, between the Moroccan city of Dakhla and the province of Coméné in Suriname. The joint statement concluded by noting that the Republic of Suriname opened an embassy in Rabat and a consulate general in Dakhla in May 2022.
