The president of Algeria, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, made his first appearance after being admitted for coronavirus and transferred to Germany, where he is continuing his recovery. A few days ago he presented a communiqué in which he stated that he would return to the country as soon as possible, but it was not until today, Sunday, that he was seen in a video of just a few minutes, which was published on his Twitter account.

As a result of Morocco's agreement with the United States whereby Washington recognises Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara, the Algerian president has been forced to appear and comment briefly on a news item of such impact

According to Tebboune himself, this news was something that both he and his government were waiting for, as they were aware of the movements being made in this respect. The foreign ministry had already warned that the United States' recognition is not legally binding and that Algeria's position is firm. Tebboune's intervention was in the same vein, commenting that Algeria will not "hesitate" to respond to this expected turn of events, which also includes the normalisation of relations with Israel.

The Algerian president also took advantage of the video to comment on his state of health. Despite the fact that his voice and appearance suggested that the recovery is slower than expected, Tebboune stated, as he had done in his previous statement, that the recovery is continuing favourably and that his return will be soon.

Finally, Tebboune also warned that he is closely following the political situation in Algeria and is constantly giving the government indications of the steps to be taken, which include drafting a new constitution and preparing the 2021 budgets.
