Several heads of state and government, including US President Donald Trump, who held a brief meeting with Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski before leaving Rome after the funeral, French President Emmanuel Macron and the King and Queen of Spain, attended the funeral of Pope Francis, who died on Monday at the age of 88.

At the end of the funeral mass, Pope Francis' coffin was transferred to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in central Rome, where the deceased had chosen to be buried.

It was mistakenly reported in Atalayar, that Prince Moulay Hassan would attend Pope Francis' funeral on behalf of the Kingdom of Morocco, but it was the head of government, Aziz Akhannouch, who represented King Mohammed VI, Amir Al Muminin, at Pope Francis' funeral, which took place on Saturday morning in St. Peter's Square in the Vatican.

Following the death of Pope Francis, Mohammed VI, Amir Al Muminin, sent a message of condolence and compassion to His Eminence Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals.

In this message, Mohammed VI expressed his “deepest sorrow and emotion” at the passing of an “eminent religious figure who dedicated his life to serving noble human ideals and common values rooted in faith, freedom, peace, love, and solidarity among different peoples.”

The King recalled “with great deference, the historic visit that His Holiness the late Pope Francis made to Morocco in March 2019. That visit reinforced the foundations of the close and special relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Holy See. It was a significant milestone in our common desire to continue strengthening dialogue, understanding, and mutual respect between the Christian and Muslim worlds.”
