The leader of the Moroccan social democratic party recognises the MSP as an interlocutor in the Western Sahara conflict

Dris Lachgar, the leader of the social democratic party Socialist Union of Popular Forces of Morocco and vice-president of the Socialist International, has recently acknowledged the need to consider the Sahrawi Peace Movement as an interlocutor in the solution of the Western Sahara conflict

During a lecture to representatives of his party in the coastal city of Skirat, near Rabat, Lachgar spoke about the Sahrawi Peace Movement’s membership of the Socialist International.

  1. Socialist International
  2. Representativity

Socialist International

This movement has been calling for its incorporation into this supranational political organisation for some time, and in fact attended the last meeting of this organisation, which was held in Rabat on 21 December, with the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, in attendance, as an observer.

According to Lachgar, the incorporation of the MSP into the Socialist International would open the door for this political organisation to become a new interlocutor for the solution of the problem of Western Sahara.

Representativity

The social democratic politician stressed that the Polisario Front can no longer hold the exclusive representativity of the Saharawis, since the Movement Saharawi for Peace has established itself in broad sectors of Saharawi society, both in the area of exile and in the territory of the Sahara itself and in other parts of Spain.

In this sense, Lachgar considered it necessary that, after the entry of the MSP into the Socialist International, the Movement should participate in the peace dialogues and in the political process promoted by the United Nations for the resolution of the Saharawi conflict.

This is the first time that a Moroccan political leader has spoken out about the SPM and called for its participation in the efforts for a political solution to the Saharawi problem acceptable to all parties.
