The MSP asks the UN for urgent intervention in Western Sahara
Hach Ahmed Bericalla, first secretary of the Movement Saharawi for Peace (MSP), sent a letter to Staffan de Mistura, personal envoy of the UN Secretary General for Western Sahara, urging for an urgent intervention of the United Nations to resolve the situation in Western Sahara and to stop an ‘absurd war’ which is causing the deaths of Saharawis.
The letter from the first secretary of the MSP is reproduced below:
For the attention of Mr. Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General for Western Sahara.
Dear Mr De Mistura,
I am again writing to bring to your attention that just three hours ago at least three people were killed and three injured by Moroccan drones.
The attack was reportedly carried out after several shells were dropped near the town of Mahbes, in the north-west of Western Sahara, not far from the Algerian border.
Yesterday, a personal childhood friend, Mohamed Ali Ould Ahmed Doula, was killed in a similar operation. No fewer than ten Sahrawi children have been orphaned as a result.
It is a regrettable occasion that prompts me once again to draw your attention to the need for urgent intervention to stop what is clearly an absurd war that only causes human loss, destruction of families, tears and more and more orphans and widows.
It is obvious that the peace process has been at an impasse for years and no less obvious that the sacrifice of innocent young people will do nothing to unblock the political process. It is a great incongruity that with blue helmets present in the territory and a ceasefire in force, the UN is unable to prevent the deaths of people and the grief of families.
Please spare no effort and in the exercise of your moral authority prevent the young Saharawis from continuing to be cannon fodder in an asymmetrical and useless war.
Please accept my warmest greetings.
Hach Ahmed
First Secretary of the MSP
