The MSP calls on the UN envoy to democratise the political process in order to move towards a lasting solution in Western Sahara and overcome key obstacles

Hach Ahmed Bericalla, first secretary of the Movement Saharawi for Peace (MPS), sent a letter on Wednesday 12 November to the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan De Mistura, in which, after congratulating him on the renewed confidence placed in him by the Security Council, he states that ‘Resolution 2797 represents an unprecedented event in the history of the Western Sahara conflict’.

The letter adds that ‘there has never been such strong support for the peace mission in the region, which offers a unique opportunity to move towards a lasting solution’.

According to the first secretary of the MSP, ‘the determination shown by the United States in defending the resolution, together with the support of influential countries such as the United Kingdom and France, provides a decisive impetus that may finally allow his mission and the political process to progress towards the long-awaited goal.’

In the letter, however, the MSP warns of ‘the difficulties and obstacles that will inevitably have to be faced along the way.’

The first secretary reiterated the MSP's willingness to cooperate with Mistura's efforts, considering ‘that today more than ever, these efforts are essential to advance towards the democratisation of the political process and the diversification of Sahrawi actors, with a view to creating the necessary conditions for his mission to be successfully completed.’
