The MSP considers the recent statements by Spanish Minister Albares on the Western Sahara issue to be timely
Commenting on Minister Albares' statements, the official spokesperson for the Saharawi Movement for Peace, Salek Rahal, considered that “they are timely because they remind us of the need for the international community to seek a solution to this dispute soon and to unblock the process for the compromise solution recommended by the Security Council”.
Salek Rahal recalled that the MSP had expressed its satisfaction with the new position of the Spanish government, emerging from a “negative neutrality” that it had maintained since the outbreak of the conflict, to encourage the parties and the personal envoy of the UN Secretary General, De Mistura, to strive to reach a political settlement.
“We share Minister Albares' opinion regarding the responsibility of those who hide behind supposed principles to keep the situation frozen for an indefinite period of time without worrying about the suffering of the people in the Tindouf camps,” said Salek Rahal.
“For this reason,” he added, “we believe it is essential and urgent to modify the format of the round table that De Mistura intends to organize and to incorporate the Saharawi Movement for Peace (MSP) as another interlocutor in the peace talks.”
In an interview with the program La Cafetera on Radiocable, Albares stated that what encourages his government is “the determination not to allow a situation that has been blocked for 50 years to continue for another five decades or a hundred years”.
The minister also harshly criticized those who prefer to keep the conflict in a state of inaction. “I find it enormously irresponsible that someone would base themselves on supposed principles to keep a situation like this frozen for another hundred years, two hundred years, a century, two centuries,” he said.
