The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the United States discussed various developments in the Middle East, in which regional security plays a prominent role, as part of the tour led by Mike Pompeo, US secretary of state, which took him to the Gulf country after passing through other nations such as Bahrain and Sudan. The aim of the visit was to consolidate the historic agreement reached by the Emirate and Israel with a view to normalising diplomatic relations. An understanding that was sponsored by the American giant with the intention of pacifying the Middle East.

The top US diplomat arrived in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday and met Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed al-Nahyan, UAE National Security Adviser. On Wednesday the two reviewed a number of regional and international issues of interest, in addition to the prospects of continuing to consolidate strategic relations between the two friendly countries.

Security in the Gulf was the main topic discussed, following the latest understanding reached by the Emirates and Israel. In addition, the two officials explored the latest developments related to the global fight against COVID-19 and the efforts of both countries to stem the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic. A scourge against which the Emirates is doing a great deal of work both internally and externally, thanks in the latter case to the major programme of international aid and cooperation it is carrying out to assist many countries in providing medical equipment for health professionals who are fighting on the front line against the pathogen in different nations around the world.

Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed and Mike Pompeo also discussed in depth the peace agreement between the United Arab Emirates and Israel and its key role in advancing peace and stability in the region. A pact sealed by the Arab country and the Hebrew country which seeks to pave the way for peace in the Middle East and which the US secretary of state has attempted to promote with his latest tour.

This agreement sealed a few weeks ago was historic thanks to the initiative of the Emirates, which announced the milestone of halting Israel's annexation of Palestinian territories in the West Bank as an integrated part of the negotiations. This was later qualified by the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. In any event, the Emirates managed to become the third country in the region to establish diplomatic ties with Israel, after Egypt and Jordan. A step forward towards understanding in the Middle East area, which is in need of greater diplomatic tranquillity and prosperity.
