The year 2025 is drawing to a close, once again marked by international tensions, but also by significant advances that give cause for hope for 2026.

The war in Ukraine remained the main concern among European citizens, who see their governments preparing them, through voluntary and compulsory military service, for a possible conflict with Russia in 2028, despite diplomatic efforts favouring partial negotiations. Meanwhile, debates on security, migration and economic competitiveness are increasingly present in Brussels.

In the Middle East, new alliances and constant outbreaks of violence despite the agreements reached underscore the need for greater commitment in the coming year.

Politically, 2025 had its highlights, but Trump's arrival in the White House has been the most shocking. Announcements of global tariffs, disputes with Europe, tension with Russia and the Middle East, and mediation in major conflicts have been the norm for the US administration, always under two premises: achieving world peace while making America great again.

Likewise, the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to María Corina Machado is further proof that the right steps are being taken to eradicate dictatorships – or narco-dictatorships – around the world.

In the last quarter, the year 2025 has left us with a key decision that solves a problem that has been stuck for five decades: on 31 October, the United Nations Security Council upheld Morocco's Autonomy Plan for Western Sahara. This decision will shape the political agenda of the African continent for 2026 and change the geostrategic framework of Europe, Africa and America.

Climate change remains a concern for governments around the world. Increasingly devastating, the consequences of global warming have once again struck around the world through increasingly violent phenomena. Another common challenge for 2026.

At Atalayar, we renew our commitment to rigorous reporting, in-depth analysis and building bridges between cultures. Therefore, for the year ahead, our wish is clear and necessary:

May 2026 be a year of agreements, solutions, cooperation and hope.

To all our readers, contributors and friends, we wish you a happy holiday season and a 2026 full of progress, health and peace.
