Chefchaouen with LED lighting
The municipality of Chefchaouen has announced a pioneering step in the field of environmental sustainability and energy efficiency by becoming the first city in Morocco and Africa to have a street lighting network completely equipped with energy-efficient LED technology.
This announcement was made during the Nexus Forum on Energy, Water and Food Security by Mohamed Sefiani, mayor of Chefchaouen, who highlighted the importance of this project in promoting sustainable development and environmental conservation.
The aim of this ambitious project is to replace all the traditional sodium street lamps with modern LED lamps, known for their low energy consumption and high efficiency.
This transformation represents a significant step forward in the city's efforts to face the challenges of climate change and reduce energy consumption, making a notable contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the improvement of air quality.
From an economic point of view, this project will have a positive impact on the budget of the municipality of Chefchaouen, as it is expected to reduce the cost of the electricity bill by more than half. The resources saved can be used for other development projects.
This achievement has been possible thanks to an effective collaboration between the municipality of Chauen, the provincial government, the General Directorate of Territorial Collectivities of the Ministry of the Interior and the United Nations Agency for the Development of Cities (UNCDF), which reflects the successful cooperation between local and international institutions to achieve sustainable development goals.
