Emirates advocates for women's role in combating climate change

Today, until 25 March, the United Nations, in collaboration with representatives of its member states and other entities such as NGOs, is holding the 66th session of the Commission on the Social and Legal Status of Women (CSW) at the UN headquarters in New York. This year, the theme of the forum is focused on the role of women in the face of the crises the planet is experiencing due to climate change.

The logo for this latest session of the commission is "Achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls in climate change, environment and disaster risk reduction policies and programmes".

Emirates, a member of the organisation, has expressed during these events that women have a vital role to play in finding a solution to the disaster the planet is heading towards. For the Gulf country, women are doing an excellent job and they have total confidence in them to mitigate the problems of the greenhouse effect and the emission of harmful gases, among other things. In addition, they point out that women today should be part of issues, such as political and economic affairs, that were previously denied to them simply because of their gender.

Mariam bin Mohamed Almheiri, the Emirati Minister of Climate Change and Environment, represented her country at the forum. There, she sought to highlight the important role of global leaders and institutions in the effort to advance women's rights, as well as the scaling of women's social position towards equality. 

"We have witnessed how the meaningful political participation of women in the UAE has made it possible to better respond to the needs of its citizens and residents," Almheiri commented during the meeting. She also highlighted the struggle of her nation's women to make a place for themselves in Emirati society and said that the government has fought alongside them. The response of this inclusion, on all kinds of issues, has been able to make Emirati society a better place.

Almheiri commented that there are several areas of society that require special attention from the international community. According to her, if this is not addressed, it will not be possible to promote gender equality in the face of the climate crisis. "We strongly believe that women can play a key role in responding to the climate crisis. We also need to harness the power of new and emerging technologies to ensure that we can adapt to climate change and how we can mitigate it," said the Emirati minister. 

The minister is leading the Gulf country on a path where more renewable energy is being used than not. She is spearheading major projects to combat climate change and her actions are not going unnoticed and are being received very positively.

The CSW is celebrating its sixty-sixth edition of an event that promotes gender equality and women's empowerment in the world. It was created in 1946 and since then, it has never stopped trying to make way for women in society, especially those who live in countries that are more restrictive with their position.

UN Women, a subsidiary of the world organisation, is the main body that influences the celebration of this event. Its mission is to develop programmes, policies and norms with the aim of being able to defend the rights of women and girls, so that they can achieve all their goals and develop their full potential in the same way as men have always been allowed to do.

In addition, it also seeks to expose women's right to leadership and political participation, while praising any economic empowerment. This is in addition to ending gender-based violence, as well as the gender pay gap for every type of woman in the world, regardless of race, background, economic status, etc.
