Emirates sends aid against COVID-19 to Costa Rica and Chile

Carlos Alvarado, president of Costa Rica, welcomed the aid plane sent to his country this Saturday as part of the United Arab Emirates' efforts to help several countries around the world contain the spread of COVID-19.
Alvarado expressed his deep appreciation to His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces, for his support in providing medical supplies to deal with the virus, and expressed his appreciation to the Government and people of the United Arab Emirates for the repatriation of Costa Rican citizens.
The plane carried 9 tons of medical supplies and 10,000 test kits offered to Costa Rica to reinforce the country's efforts to curb the spread of VIDOC-19.
The aid will help approximately 9,000 medical professionals in their efforts to contain the virus.
Commenting on the aid delivery, Juma Rashid Khamis Ahmad Al Rumaithi, Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to Costa Rica, said: "Thanks to the support and guidance of the leaders of our two countries, bilateral relations have taken a quantum leap. This has contributed to the creation of a strategic partnership and has led to increased cooperation, trade and development. In this context, medical assistance has been provided to Costa Rica, which confirms the strength and durability of these relations".
The Ambassador added: "The United Arab Emirates is always ready to support brotherly and friendly countries and to help medical teams that are among the most vulnerable to the pandemic.

Etihad goodwill flight to Costa Rica
Etihad Airways operated its first flight from Abu Dhabi to San Jose, Costa Rica's capital, on Saturday. The goodwill flight carried Costa Rican citizens returning home, and humanitarian aid from the United Arab Emirates government, to assist Costa Rica in its fight against COVID-19.
The Boeing 787-9 also carried Dominican citizens returning from the United Arab Emirates, and the flight landed in Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic, before continuing to Costa Rica.
The flight was received by Costa Rican officials and diplomatic personnel from the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in San Jose.
Following the suspension of all normal passenger flights to and from the United Arab Emirates on 24 March, Etihad has provided special humanitarian services to 34 cities around the world, all of which are not currently served by the airline's passenger or cargo flight network. These include Bogotá, Havana, Santo Domingo, Bucharest, Grozny, Kyiv, Larnaca, Podgorica, Tirana, Yerevan, Zagreb, Auckland, Bhubaneswar, Bishkek, Dushanbe and Dhaka, Erbil, Kabul, Lucknow, Makhachkala, Addis Ababa, Antananarivo, Bamako, Banjul, Conakry, Freetown, Harare, Kinshasa, Moroni, N'Djamena, Niamey and Nouakchott.
The airline recently operated special humanitarian flights carrying essential medical and humanitarian cargo to the Palestinian territories.

Medical aid to Chile

Theodore Ribera, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Chile, expressed his thanks and gratitude to the United Arab Emirates for the aid plane sent to his country on Friday as part of the United Arab Emirates' efforts to help several countries around the world contain the spread of COVID-19.
This came as the minister received the plane carrying 9 tons of medical supplies to Chile to reinforce the country's efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19. The aid will help approximately 9,000 medical professionals in their work to contain the virus.
Commenting on the aid delivery, Abdul Razzaq Mohamed Hadi, the UAE Ambassador to Chile, said: "Relations between the UAE and Chile are constantly evolving, and there is a great interest in developing cooperation between our two countries. Today's medical assistance to Chile is part of the strengthening of bilateral relations and contributing to the efforts of the country's competent authorities to combat COVID-19 by protecting frontline medical workers".

To date, the UAE has responded to the COVID-19 crisis by providing more than 904 tonnes of assistance to over 64 countries, supporting more than 904,000 medical professionals against the pandemic.
