The "la Caixa" Foundation finances innovative research projects of a social nature
The "la Caixa" Foundation launches a competitive call for proposals to finance research projects that stand out for their excellence, innovative nature and social orientation. The proposals will be based on quantitative methodologies and will aim to generate new knowledge to help understand today's most relevant social challenges.
Proposals will be submitted in two phases: a first phase from 27 April to 20 May 2020; and a second phase from July to September this year.
The aim of this call is to support social research projects that stand out for their excellence and that are based on quantitative data that provide, through an original and innovative approach, robust and solid information for an in-depth understanding of today's social challenges.
Projects must be based on data analysis through quantitative methodologies and must make reference to Spain and/or Portugal; or, if not, be replicable to them.
The total budget of the call is 1.5 million euros, and with this allocation it is foreseen to finance projects of up to 100,000 euros each with a maximum duration of 24 months.
The call is aimed at active researchers who can demonstrate an independent scientific career and corroborate their recent scientific production. For this reason, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Candidates must accredit a publication published in journals of the first quartile (Q1) according to the rankings of the Scimago Journal Rank (SJR) of Scopus or the Journal Citations Report (JCR) of Web of Science. For the latter, only the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) and Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) will be considered.
- Applicants must have a PhD awarded more than two years before the deadline of the call (i.e. before 20 May 2018).
The call is open to researchers of all nationalities carrying out their work in a non-profit research institution: universities and public and private research centres based in Spain or Portugal.
For short proposals the opening of the call, in the first phase, will be on 27 April 2020; with a deadline for submission set for 20 May 2020, at 14.00 CET. The pre-selection of projects will be from June to July this year.
For full proposals, the second phase will open in July 2020, with a submission deadline of 15 September 2020 at 14.00 CET. The pre-selection of proposals will take place between September and October of this year.
The selection committee will be present in the city of Barcelona on 19 and 20 November 2020 and the notification of the resolution will take place on 30 November 2020.
The submission of proposals is structured according to a two-stage incremental process. Applicants must submit a short proposal, maximum three pages, describing the idea of the research project and the social challenge(s) addressed, highlighting the original and innovative aspects.
Candidates whose short proposals have been pre-selected and go on to the next phase will be invited to submit a full proposal, of a maximum of 15 pages, which will provide more detailed information on the project and its methodology. In addition, they must provide evidence of merit and experience demonstrating their competence to carry out the proposed research.
Both the proposals and all the required documentation must be written in English. All information relating to this call is available in English only.
