The Libyan College of Madrid celebrated International Arabic Language Day at the Casa Árabe headquarters in the Spanish capital.

The event was attended by the Libyan ambassador to Spain, Walid Bashir Abuabdallah, and the Saudi Arabian ambassador Azzam Abdulkarim Algain, as well as personalities from the worlds of diplomacy, culture and economics.

During the event, students from the same school carried out a wide range of activities, all of which were designed to highlight the importance of the Arabic language, which is currently spoken by more than 422 million people.

The activities presented exclusively by the school's students included classical poetry recitals, plays and songs in the Arabic language.

Abdalah Alarabe, director of the Libyan College and Attaché of Culture of the Libyan embassy in Madrid told Atalayar that Arabic is one of the five most spoken languages in the world: "We are commemorating the international day of the Arabic language. From the Libyan School and the Cultural Department of the Libyan Embassy we wanted to join in the celebrations that are taking place through a programme dedicated to highlighting the importance of the Arabic language. Our students performed plays, recited poetry and sang several songs in the Arabic language.

The school depends on the Ministry of Culture of the Embassy of the State of Libya in Madrid and was founded in 1982 with the aim of offering the possibility of studying in Arabic and is currently the only Arabic school that continues to maintain an educational offer ranging from the first years of compulsory education to the baccalaureate, through ESO.

The Libyan School is accredited by the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training and authorised by the Community of Madrid, and welcomes pupils of different nationalities, although Libyan pupils, children of employees of the Libyan Embassy in Madrid, make up the majority of its pupils.

The school has modern facilities to teach the different subjects of the educational curriculum. In addition, its pupils actively participate in solidarity campaigns such as the collection of food for the needy.
