Morocco has been ranked as the third African country with the best quality of life, according to the Quality of Life Index 2025 developed by the Numbeo Foundation.

What is the Quality of Life Index?

The Quality of Life Index assesses and measures the general living conditions of a country or city, taking into account factors such as purchasing power, pollution levels, affordability, safety, medical standards, cost of living and travel times.

2025 Index data

Morocco came third with a score of 110.8 after South Africa, which finished first with 152.4, and Tunisia with 117.3. The Moroccan kingdom also scored better than Kenya, which came fourth with a score of 101.7, and Egypt, which ranked fifth on the list with a score of 85.3.

On the other hand, Nigeria has experienced a drastic drop in its overall score, dropping out of the list of the top five African countries. According to the report, the West African giant is known to have dropped from 49.5 in 2023 to 21.5, dropping significantly due to the country's worsening living conditions.

Importance of the ranking

Let us not forget that high rankings in this index reflect a better quality of life and serve to compare and analyse the different standards of living in any region of the world.

However, recent years have seen a number of fluctuations in global assessments, which are a product of economic changes, climate change, political stability and public health challenges, as in the case of Nigeria.

Morocco's prosperity vs. quality of life

Although Morocco has dropped one place in the rankings from last year's second place, this does not mean that the quality of life has declined, as the country has registered an increase in its score from 104.7 in 2024. This is just a clear example that the country continues to improve year after year, regardless of the position it occupies, the important thing is that the quality of life continues to increase for the well-being of the North African country and its inhabitants.

It should be added that the country closed the year 2024 having accomplished a long list of political, diplomatic and climatic achievements that have improved the situation of Moroccan life. On the political side, Morocco has demonstrated its commitment to the fight against corruption by promoting judicial reform, while strengthening its diplomatic relations with countries such as France, thanks to the release of hostages in Burkina Faso, and the United States, with the opening of one of its Development Finance Corporation (DFC) offices in Rabat. In addition, the country achieved a significant improvement in the filling rate of dams, offering a respite from the water crisis with strategies such as ‘Digital Morocco 2030’.

Conclusions

It is clear that, due to the state of the global landscape, the climate and health crisis, economic changes, political stability and wars, not many countries have been able to stand on their feet compared to other years. However, the countries that have managed to avoid these challenges and maintain a good standard of living for their citizens have been the best ranked.

Morocco continues to be an example among African countries, as it is not the first time that it has topped the rankings in terms of quality of life. In 2023, the Moroccan kingdom ranked first on the continent and 52nd globally, with a score of 12.7 out of 100, standing out mainly for its affordability and safety, according to a US News report. Moreover, thanks to its progress on multiple indicators and its focus on improving living conditions, the country has become a promising destination for investment and decent living.
