The Spanish airline Iberia will operate next Sunday a special flight from the Moroccan city of Casablanca to Madrid, so that customers stranded in Morocco can return after the closure of flights with Spain and France.

The company said Friday that it will operate this service with an Airbus A321, with capacity for 200 passengers, and customers with Iberia tickets to fly from Morocco will be accepted at no additional cost, while the rest will have a reduced fare.

To be able to travel to Spain, passengers aged 6 and over need proof that they are free of COVID-19 within 72 hours of arrival and to fill in an entry form before boarding.

Some 3,000 Spaniards who had travelled on holiday to Morocco for Easter were stranded in the Maghreb country by the decision of the Moroccan authorities to suspend flights to and from Spain and France from Tuesday night.

On Sunday, a ship from the Balearia shipping company is also scheduled to sail from the Moroccan port of Tangiers to the Spanish port of Algeciras, and another from Transmediterránea is scheduled for next Tuesday, in both cases with a capacity of around 750 passengers and with the main aim of resolving cases of Spanish citizens or residents in Spain who are stranded in Morocco.

These ships are chartered in coordination between the Spanish Embassy in Rabat and the Moroccan Foreign Ministry, and for more urgent cases there is also the possibility of flying from Morocco to Senegal or Mauritania and from there to Spain, as these routes are still open.

Morocco's suspension of flights to France and Spain has been decided for health reasons, to prevent the spread of new variants of the coronavirus, especially on the eve of Easter and the fasting month of Ramadan, which each year involves the movement of thousands of people between these countries.
