The 'la Caixa' Foundation supports the future of 67,000 vulnerable children
Throughout 2025, the 'la Caixa' Foundation's CaixaProinfancia programme has supported nearly 67,000 vulnerable children and adolescents throughout Spain, offering them educational, social and family support so that a lack of resources does not limit their opportunities.
The programme, which has been running since 2007, operates where inequality hits hardest, providing educational support services, leisure and free time activities, psychosocial support and family support, always through an extensive network of social entities and in coordination with public services.
'Child poverty is not just an economic issue, but also one of opportunities. With CaixaProinfancia, we work to ensure that no child or adolescent sees their future limited by the context in which they are born. The results show that sustained educational and social support over time makes a difference. With CaixaProinfancia, we work to ensure that no child or adolescent sees their future limited by the context in which they are born. The results show that sustained educational and social support over time makes a real difference in the life trajectories of the most vulnerable children,' says Marc Simón, deputy director general of the 'la Caixa' Foundation.
The programme's impact data confirm positive results in terms of educational success. 84.7% of the children supported graduate from secondary school, a figure 2.6 percentage points higher than the national average. In addition, the school dropout rate among programme participants is around 3.5%.
Comprehensive support for vulnerable families
The programme serves children and adolescents from nearly 43,000 families throughout Spain who are facing situations of vulnerability. More than 50% are single-parent families and more than half of the parents are unemployed, many of them without receiving benefits. Among the parents who are part of the programme, the majority have a low or very low level of education.
For this reason, CaixaProinfancia does not only intervene with minors, but also acts on the family environment, strengthening parenting skills and providing resources that contribute to improving the stability and well-being of the whole family.
A social investment with real impact
In a context of growing social inequality—in which one in three children in Spain is at risk of poverty or social exclusion—CaixaProinfancia reinforces its commitment to children as a high-impact social investment. The programme offers assistance and services ranging from educational support and access to leisure and free-time activities to individual and family psychotherapy, educational support for families, whose involvement is crucial to the academic performance of children, and school equipment and coverage of basic needs.
CaixaProinfancia acts on the factors that condition child development in vulnerable contexts, such as lack of self-esteem and emotional security or deficiencies in nutrition, hygiene and visual or auditory health, which directly affect well-being and learning. All this is done through comprehensive intervention aimed at guaranteeing equal opportunities from the earliest years of life and preventing social origin from determining people's futures.
The programme is present in all the autonomous communities and in the two autonomous cities, operating in 155 municipalities through a network of 475 social entities, and has an annual budget of around 82 million euros.
