Maradona dies at the age of 60
Former Argentinean footballer Diego Armando Maradona has died of a sudden cardiorespiratory arrest. The lint had previously been admitted as a result of a blood clot in the brain.
After the operation and after being admitted for ten days, he moved to his home in Tigre, where he died on Wednesday afternoon. The Argentinean star has not been able to overcome his constant health problems.
The first reactions have not been long in coming. Real Madrid's export agent Iker Casillas was one of the first to post a message of condolence on his social networks.
Maradona will always be remembered as one of the icons of world football. Diego began his career at the age of 16 at Argentinos Juniors, although he soon set off for Boca, where he was always considered an idol. He was later transferred to Barcelona for a record amount of money at the time.
During his time at Barcelona, rumours began to emerge about his nightlife and his flirtation with drugs. He never really settled in Barcelona and it was in Naples that he became an absolute idol.
Maradona managed to bring a relatively modest club to the top. In this club he won two Scudettos and a Cup, an Uefa Cup and a Supercup. Meanwhile, with the Argentine national team he won the World Cup in Mexico in 1986, at the height of his career, where he put in an exceptional performance, leaving the iconic image of the goal with the hand (the hand of God) in the match against England, in which he also sealed one of the most beautiful goals ever seen on a pitch.
But Maradona's footballing career began its decline when he tested positive for cocaine in 1991, which sent him off the field for 15 months due to suspension, signifying his departure from Naples, where he became a true idol. Once he hung up his boots, he began a career as a coach, with many comings and goings, including Mexico, in Dorados de Sinaloa, and emphasizing in Gimnasia y Esgrima de la Plata, in his country.
Maradona's death has shocked the population of his native Argentina, which has decreed three days of official mourning.
