The Sevilla centre-back has yet to make his debut and the French press are already suggesting that his contract could be terminated

The mystery of Ramos at PSG

AP/FRANCOIS MORI - PSG's Sergio Ramos during the presentation of the players before the French Ligue 1 football match between Paris Saint Germain and Strasbourg at the Parc des Princes stadium in Paris, Saturday 14 August 2021

The day Sergio Ramos presented the second part of his documentary on Amazon, he tempted too much luck. Bad luck. He was in the great dynamic of performance that has always accompanied him. Goals, titles, international caps, renewals... everything was in place for the great captain of Real Madrid who dreamed of a European Championship and Olympic Games to step on the Olympus of footballers.

Few injuries

But then came the injuries. Ramos is a player who has not had many injuries during his career. Muscles failed from time to time but almost everything was recoverable in just 10 days. His body is genetically prepared and, in addition, he works long hours in the gym to gain strength.

It all started with a knee injury after the Super Cup match against Athletic Bilbao in February 2021. The meniscus in his knee did not withstand conservative treatment because he needed surgery as soon as possible to start improving. Menisci are not a career-ending injury. In the case of Ansu Fati, it will never be clear what happened after the operation and, in the case of Ramos, it is also unclear whether the problem is with the knee or the soleus in his left leg.

Knee and soleus

Sergio Ramos signed for PSG with an injury. The medical examinations were favourable except for the knee and soleus, but everything indicated that it could be resolved in a few months of treatment. Ligue 1 started with a historic team with Messi, Neymar and Mbappé and the goal of winning it all. But Ramos was not training with the rest of his teammates.

There was even talk on two occasions about his debut. Pochettino didn't know how to get out of the way when he was asked about it in the press conference. It wasn't too difficult to divert attention from Ramos given the constellation of players in Paris. An injury, a draw, Florentino Pérez talking about transfers or Leonardo answering. Everything but looking at Ramos.

Leaks

Now it has been Le Parisien, PSG's leading newspaper, which has opportunely leaked that the French club could terminate the Sevillian's contract. It is not crazy because it would be normal for the clauses to set a door for the parties to dissolve the situation if the injury is prolonged. That is what PSG is now leaking to the media because they can no longer afford to pay for a player who is not performing in any way.

On the other hand, Leonardo, with his usual vehemence, has been speaking out against the press in the most heated terms. He accuses the Spanish media of dirtying the situation and washes his hands of a possible exit.

Sergio Ramos's sporting life got complicated one fine day in February and seven months later it doesn't look like it's going to end well. Paris is worth a mass, though.
