Sadio Mané beats team-mate Mohammed Salah on penalties
Senegal won the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in their history. Egypt have already won it seven times. It is the team that has won the African Cup of Nations the most times.
This year's 2022 final between Senegal and Egypt had two great representatives who share a team in the English Premier League, Liverpool.
Sadio Mané for Senegal and Mohammed Salah for Egypt. The two players had been protagonists in every match of the Cup until the final. Both lived up to expectations by being decisive in the important matches.
The main feature of recent African Cup finals is that the winner is decided from the penalty spot.
Algeria, the last champions, beat Egypt 1-0 in 2019.
Côte d'Ivoire, Zambia, Cameroon twice and Egypt themselves in 2006 won it from the penalty spot.
This 2022 final started well for Senegal when in the seventh minute a challenge by French Nancy full-back Saliou Ciss was awarded a penalty.
Of course, it was Senegal star Sadio Mané who took the spot-kick. But here his team-mate, but rival in the final, Mohammed Salah, came into action. He quickly instructed his goalkeeper, Gabaski, how Sadio would take the penalty.
It was successful. Sadio Mané's shot was very strong but just wide and was saved by the Egyptian goalkeeper.
Senegal did not back down and continued to take the lead in the game, coming close, but without clear chances, to the Egyptian goal. Egypt did not trouble the Senegalese defence, Salah tried with some long-range shots.
The second half was the same. Senegal were closing in on the Egyptian goal, but with no luck in finishing. The Egyptian goalkeeper Gabaski was the best of his team. In stoppage time, he deflected a great shot from Bamba Dieng that went through the Egyptian defence.
Extra time was very conservative for both teams. There were only a couple of chances that the goalkeepers saved without any problems.
It goes to penalties
For Senegal, experienced Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly starts the shootout and scores. Egypt's Zizo also scored with a great shot.
Diallo subtly scores Senegal's second, but Abdelmonem's shot crashes against Gabaski's right post.
Bayern Munich defender Sarr had a chance to keep Senegal in front, but his shot was saved by Gabaski as Egypt's saviour.
Marwan Hamdi deceives Chelsea's European champion goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to equalise.
Bamba Dieng scored for Senegal and then the European champion goalkeeper was on hand to save Mohanad Lasheen's shot.
It was Sadio Mané's turn and a chance to make amends for his early mistake. If he scores he wins the African Cup and there would be no need for Liverpool team-mate Mohammed Salah to shoot. Right-footed cross to the right of Gabaski, who this time could not stop the Senegal star's superb missile. The same place, but this time much closer to the post.
Sadio Mané is the hero of the final along with goalkeeper Mendy.
First Africa Cup of Nations for Senegal.
