Biden's first economic triumph

Joe Biden

President Biden scored the first major economic triumph in his first year in the White House this weekend. After a long battle between Democrats and Republicans, weighed down by internal confrontations and divisions in both parties, the House of Representatives approved his administration's star project: a gigantic infrastructure plan with a budget of one trillion dollars.

The difficult deal is seen as a breath of fresh air for the president at a time when his popularity has plummeted to 42%. The withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan and the serious incidents that occurred during the evacuation have been devastating for his image. Biden's arrival in power, after the convulsive period of Donald Trump, had awakened many expectations that have yet to materialise.

Domestic economic problems, with soaring prices, are taking their toll, which his staff hope will be overcome with the news of the Infrastructure Plan. The aim is a transformation of the road, airport and maritime transport networks that is expected to make a major leap forward in the development of the whole of the states and their intercommunications.

One of the immediate benefits anticipated from the plan is the large number of jobs it will create. Democrats, for their part, hope it will revive their voters ahead of the mid-term elections due in a year's time. The recent memory of the defeat in Carolina, where their gubernatorial candidate was soundly defeated by the Republican, has raised concerns about the composition of the House in 2022.

Both parties were satisfied with the approval of the plan in Congress. For the Democrats it is the relief they had longed for, and for the Republicans, who achieved many of their demands in the content of the bill, for having freed themselves to some extent from the influence of Trump, who continues to be relentless in his desire to prove that he was robbed of his second presidential term and does not cease in his determination to run again in 2024.

Amidst the joy that the agreement provoked, some voices were heard lamenting that so much time had not been wasted in agreeing to such a momentous deal.
