Africa is the option

Evidence takes time to turn into real opportunities until needs become urgent and demand effective solutions.

We are talking about Africa, a continent that some claim is the solution to Europe's problems. And about the old continent where demographic decline and deindustrialisation are causing serious stagnation with grave risks for the welfare state and a profound crisis of principles and values, where authoritarian populism is seeking to displace liberal democracies.

It is not easy to explain why the processes of development and change in certain structures are delayed over time when they are not complicated. Key interests have been holding back the evolution of African countries subjected to colonialism by European countries that benefit from the raw materials in each of the African territories and then send them manufactured products, condemning them to underdevelopment. Other players have entered the scene in recent years, such as the United States, China and Russia, which have enabled a series of changes in all areas.

On the positive side, we can see remarkable development in many of the 54 countries that make up the continent, each with its own idiosyncrasies, customs, riches and serious needs. This development is emerging now that wars, exploitation and dictatorships have almost been overcome. The key is education and training for the young African generation, who are aware that their lives can improve greatly by becoming a skilled workforce for European companies and institutions.

Meanwhile, there are serious threats to overcome, such as radical political Islamism, terrorist groups, Russian and Iranian interference, widespread corruption that affects entire sectors in many countries, and drought and climate change, which is another determining factor, along with violence and the misery of migration in search of a dignified life in Europe.

Against this backdrop, African and Spanish experts gathered in Madrid for the third edition of the Africa Spain Summit 2025, organised by One Africa Forums, to promote collaboration at all levels between Africans and Europeans. Key conclusions to bear in mind: ‘Spain can help Africa become more competitive’. ‘Spain can find many opportunities to invest in Africa.’ ‘A shared desire to build a renewed, ambitious and supportive partnership.’ ‘European companies need to know that they will find skilled personnel in Africa and should see Africa as a great opportunity.’ ‘Investing in Africa is a safe bet and should be on the radar of large investment funds.’
