Morocco and the coronavirus

Mohamed VI

The coronavirus pandemic arrived later in Morocco, but it did not arrive with less virulence and they were able to react in time and take the appropriate measures to prevent the catastrophe from escalating. They have been at the forefront of containment measures worldwide, with severe restrictions, but with effective results in terms of the spread of the virus.

Firstly, King Mohamed VI pardoned 5624 prisoners, as a preventive measure against the coronavirus and with the main purpose of safeguarding their lives, taking into account their age, the circumstances of their state of health, the length of their detention, as well as their good behaviour. This measure is the first time that it was applied by royal grace to prevent its spread due to the excess prison population.

Secondly, we must highlight the work of Moroccan researchers who have managed to invent an intelligent mask that detects the possibility of coronavirus infection from a distance, apparently by means of modern computer techniques that are accompanied by a "tracking" application (Trackorona), which provides a method of predicting and diagnosing the disease. The scientific team is led by Dr. Mouhsine Lakhdissi. According to Dr. Lakhdissi's statement, this 100% Moroccan project is innovative and low cost.

In the aspect of research, we must also highlight the wager of the administration of components that are already medicines that have been tested in the elimination of other viruses and that the decision was taken to subsequently carry out the administration on human beings.

King Mohammed VI has a regular work team, with which he is in constant contact in order to keep abreast of the evolution of the pandemic and to boost the implementation of aid to the Moroccan population abroad who, for the moment, do not have the means to travel to their country, due to the closure of borders and the suspension of transportation, being assisted by the corresponding embassies, but which a network of doctors and lawyers will attend to from Thursday 16, in the countries where they are.

Another point under discussion in Spain and other European countries, such as the provision of masks and medical equipment, has also been addressed urgently, and the government in Rabat has set up two factories, one in the capital and the other in Casablanca, to reach the figure of 5 million masks produced per day.

Regarding the victims, the number of cases of coronavirus, continues to grow, although far from the dramatic figures of Spain, even so, the number of infected cases exceeds three thousand and the number of deaths exceeds 130. As for the victims in the Sahara of this devastating pandemic, in Ayoun and Dakhla, the two principal towns of the province, there are no victims affected. The measures imposed by the Moroccan Government for the country's return to normal are to be welcomed and acknowledged.
