The Three Cultures Foundation, the Embassy of Israel and Centro Sefarad address the Jewish exodus from Arab countries

The Three Cultures Foundation

Due to various circumstances and factors in each country, between the 1940s and the 1970s thousands of Jews were forced to leave countries such as Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Morocco or Lebanon and emigrate mainly to Israel. This caused their historical presence in these Arab countries to disappear. The Israeli Embassy in Spain, the Three Cultures of the Mediterranean Foundation and Centro Sefarad-Israel have joined forces to publicise and deepen awareness of these events, organising two activities entitled 'The silent exodus of the Jews from Arab countries'.

The first is a conversation between Abraham Bengio, President of the Culture Commission of LICRA (International League against Racism and Anti-Semitism), and Esther Bendahan, Director of Culture at Centro Sefarad-Israel, about the life of these communities. There will also be a virtual visit to the exhibition 'The Jewry of Babylon. The Broken Dream' by Rosa Méndez, head of the Documentation Centre of Centro Sefarad-Israel. The second table, also online, will deal with the testimonies of the descendants of these families, among whom are the writer Verónica Nehama, a native of Egypt who lives in Madrid, and Nelly Ben, a native of Morocco who lives in Israel.

The first conference and the virtual visit can be followed through the Centro Sefarad-Israel Youtube channel on December 2nd at 19:00h. Those interested in the testimonies of the exodus will be able to follow it on December 9 at 6pm live on Facebook Live and the Youtube channel of The Three Cultures Foundation or on the Zoom platform by registering at the following link.
