The Three Cultures Foundation presents the exhibition 'Gods of the Frontier: for a biology of images'
In this exhibition project, Clara Carvajal explores the visual memory of Lebanon through the archives of three important collections of Lebanese photography: the Arab Image Foundation, the archives of the AN-NAHAR newspaper and the collection of photographer Emile Boulos Divers.
Clara Carvajal has explored these photographic archives in depth in order to analyse the social response to Lebanon's historical and military conflicts from the time the country gained independence from the French mandate in the 1940s until the outbreak of civil war in 1975.
As the exhibition curator Zara Fernández de Moya explains, the artist questions the transformative capacity of the image which, while remaining true to itself, is updated in each new medium and, thanks to this journey, it enlarges itself and our gaze.
Clara Carvajal, a Spanish artist trained as a sculptor, works with cultural processes of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern languages. Digital technology and geometric graphic writings are the object of her work.
In this exhibition project, she has created a collection of wood engravings based on images chosen by herself, with which she seeks to delve deeper into her iconography: the happy girl, the sensual couple in love strolling by the sea, the male body as a divine icon, the father proud of his child, the saviour, the caregiver, the muse who enjoys herself...
The exhibition will open on March 3 with the presence of the creator Clara Carvajal and the curator, Zara Fernández, and will open its doors at 13:00. It can then be visited at the Three Cultures of the Mediterranean Foundation until 9 April, Monday to Thursday from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm and Fridays from 8.30 am to 2.30 pm.
This project was developed thanks to the 2017/18 VEGAP Grants.
