THE GREAT GYPSY ROUNDUP: HISTORY OF A GENOCIDE

Pilar Távora | Spain | 2025 | 85 min.

Synopsis: One of the most serious attempts to exterminate the Gypsy people in Spain was the so-called ‘General Prison for Gypsies’. After several centuries of attempts to control and subjugate the population without achieving the desired result, in 1749, Ferdinand VI, with the Marquis of Ensenada and the close collaboration of the clergy, launched an unprecedented operation against the Romani people in which thousands of men, women, and children were separated and condemned without crime to punishments aimed at their extinction; a persecution without precedent in the history of Spain that remains hidden in the history books.
