The Three Cultures Foundation still committed to Israeli cinema in January
As on previous occasions and coinciding with the commemoration of Holocaust Remembrance Day on 27 January, the Three Cultures of the Mediterranean Foundation is dedicating its January film programme to Israeli cinema. This series, organised in collaboration with the Israeli Embassy in Spain, offers the possibility of discovering the most significant aspects of current Israeli filmography.
As part of the Cinema on Tuesday’s programme, on January 19th 'Gett, the divorce of Viviane Amsalem' will be screened, starring the late actress Ronit Elkabetz, one of Israel's most visionary filmmakers and actresses. In 2014, the film she starred in and co-directed with her brother Shlomi Elkabetz, won the Ophir Award for Best Film, the equivalent of the Oscars in Israel. It is the third part of a trilogy in which Ronit Elkabetz gives life to a woman trapped in an unhappy marriage.
Gett, the divorce of Viviane Amsalem' tells the story of Viviane Amsalem, a woman who has been separated from Elisha, her husband, for years, and who wants a divorce so that she does not become a social outcast. In Israel, civil marriage does not yet exist and according to religious laws, divorce can only be granted by the husband. However, Elisha refuses to do so. Viviane will have to fight for years before the Rabbinical Court to obtain what she considers a right.
The programme, which opened on January 12 with Eliran Malka's acclaimed film 'The Unorthodox', will close with the musical documentary 'The Wonderful Kingdom of Papa Alaev', directed by the young filmmaker Tal Barda (1983, Israel) and the director Noam Pinchas (1974, Israel)
Tal Barda, who trained in Film and Television at Tel Aviv University and in Art History at Toulouse University, has directed and produced several documentaries, one of the most outstanding being 'A Heartbeat Away' (2015).
Noam Pinchas, who trained in film in Boston, has been creating documentaries based on funny and charismatic characters since 2006.
All films will be screened in their original version with Spanish subtitles.
