GITEX Africa 2024: success anticipated
After an undoubtedly successful inaugural event in 2023, preparations are being finalised for the second edition of GITEX Africa, the largest technology and start-up event on the African continent.
The event will take place in Morocco on 29, 30 and 31 May. Some 1,400 companies from more than 60 different countries are expected to participate, which represents a 70% increase in participation compared to last year. This is evidence of the growing confidence of international players in Morocco in the digital sector.
"We expect 1,500 exhibitors, compared to 900 last year, 800 start-ups, compared to 400 last year, and more than 50,000 visitors, compared to 30,000 last year," said Ghita Mezzour, Minister Delegate for Digital Transition and Administrative Reform in Morocco, at a press conference to present the event.
Mezzour stressed the importance of having such a large number of new players compared to 2023. As he said, the significantly higher presence of attendees from different parts of the world reveals a global confidence in the African country as a promising regional player in the digital sector.
The event does not intend to leave anyone indifferent. As the most important startup and technology event in Africa, the aim is to create a hub for exchanges on the latest technological innovations in Artificial Intelligence, health, telecommunications, cybersecurity, sustainability, finance and the cloud.
Morocco wants to be an international showcase for technology, innovation and networking. This would open a large door for foreign investment in the country. On the other hand, it is intended to be a unique acceleration platform for start-ups and SMEs, which would increase the entry of companies from all over the world into the region's markets.
Moreover, on a purely national level, the forum allows for a meeting between government, academia, industry and start-ups, as well as the creation of a number of jobs to enhance the contribution of young Moroccans to the labour market.
Trixie Loh Mirmand, CEO of Kaoun International and Executive Vice President of the Dubai World Center, was also present at the press conference and underlined Morocco's important role in the digital transformation across the continent. In essence, Moroccan development also means African development.
The host country will be represented by 530 local companies; a growth of 85% compared to the previous edition and showing the Moroccan commitment. Experts, specialists and policy makers will also be present, who will speak from their experience on three main themes: "Building a unified digital Africa", "Connectivity" and "Digital cities".
This year, GITEX Africa has been marked by World Future Health Africa 2024, the largest digital health investment and procurement forum on the continent. With a mission to accelerate digital technology in Africa, it brings together the leading international companies in the field.
