Iberdrola, one of the world's largest renewable energy companies, and Holcim, a global leader in innovative and sustainable building solutions, have signed a major new clean power purchase agreement (PPA) in Germany - and have agreed to work together on a wide range of new sustainability initiatives.

Under the new agreement, Iberdrola will supply Holcim with 250 gigawatt-hours (GWh) per year of renewable energy from its Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm in Germany. This clean energy will help accelerate Holcim's goal of achieving energy neutrality in Germany, where it has set a target to increase the use of renewable energy in its operations to more than 80% by 2030.

The Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm is currently under construction in the Baltic Sea, north of the island of Rügen, and will have a total capacity of 476 megawatts (MW) when completed in 2024.

As part of a broader agreement, the two companies have set up a working group to analyse the potential for realising a wide range of new sustainability-related projects in Europe and potentially on other continents.

Proposals being developed include possible additional PPAs to decarbonise operations, as well as analysis of suitable locations for developing on-site renewable energy facilities at Holcim-owned operating plants, ranging from solar photovoltaics to green hydrogen.

Iberdrola will also help Holcim to analyse projects that can help increase the electrification of existing industrial processes and drive electric mobility solutions.

Ultimately, in the long term, both companies aim to deploy 100% emission-free green cement to help build renewable energy projects around the world.

Aitor Moso, Director of Iberdrola's Customer Business, said: "Iberdrola is proud to work with Holcim and support its drive to be at the forefront of sustainability in building solutions. Our agreement will allow clean energy from offshore wind to support Holcim's operations immediately, and both companies want to expand our sustainable collaboration much further in the coming weeks, months and years".

"All companies and sectors must innovate and have a clear and realistic strategy to reduce emissions and achieve the goal of a net-zero emissions world. Innovative agreements such as the one we have established with Holcim bring together the best initiatives from different sectors and help accelerate the path to net zero".

Rodrigo Martín Flores, Head of Infrastructure and Key Account Management at Holcim, said: "I am delighted to sign this agreement with Iberdrola and join another world leader in sustainability to accelerate the construction of sustainable infrastructure for renewable energy. The transition to net zero energy requires deep collaboration across our value chain. No one organisation can do it alone".

In recent months, Iberdrola has established several long-term cross-cutting partnerships to promote the decarbonisation of the economy:

Recently, Iberdrola and MAPFRE advanced their strategic alliance to develop onshore renewables in Spain, adding an additional 100 MW through a joint venture, which already has a capacity of 450 MW.

Earlier this year, Iberdrola and Norges Bank Investment Management signed an alliance to co-invest in 1,265 MW of new renewable capacity in Spain.

Iberdrola and BP also signed a strategic alliance in March to deploy 11,700 fast-charging points in Spain and Portugal.
