Más de 200.000 marroquíes afiliados a la Seguridad Social en España
During this summer, Spain's Social Security system has experienced an increase in foreign affiliates. In June, 31,251 more people were registered compared to the previous month, according to data from the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration. In July, despite the fact that 1,409 fewer workers were registered, the number of registered workers reached 2,378,437.
According to the figures for July, 846,484 of the foreigners registered with the Spanish Social Security system are citizens from European Union countries (34.5%), while 1,605,008 (the remaining 65.5%) are from non-EU countries. Among the foreign affiliates in July, 55.8% were men and 44.2% were women, a figure similar to that of the previous month.
With regard to the country of origin of the workers, Romania occupies first place with 339,053 registered citizens. The European country is followed by Morocco, with 285,046, Italy (163,826), Colombia (122,192) and Venezuela (118,147). The data were similar to those of June, although the number of Moroccan workers experienced a drop compared to the previous month (306,898). Within the groups of foreign workers, the 58,213 Ukrainians, a figure that has increased since the beginning of the Russian invasion, should be noted.
The Spanish regions where foreign affiliation increased most were in northern areas such as Cantabria (5.5%), Galicia (3.7%) and Asturias (3.2%), as well as the Balearic Islands (2.7%). In contrast, the number of foreign workers decreased in Andalusia (-8%), La Rioja (-6.3%), Murcia (-5.49%) and Extremadura (-4.7%).
Among the sectors with more foreign affiliates, Water supply (8%), household activities (6.3%), hotels and catering (4.8%), health (4.3%), administration (4.2%) and artistic activities (3.5%) stand out. On the other hand, education (-20.1%) and agriculture (-7.2) show the strongest decreases.
In addition to the high number of Moroccans working in Spain, more than 150,000 obtained a residence permit in the European Union in 2021. Citizens of the Kingdom accounted for 5 per cent of the total number of people who obtained this permit last year, according to data from the European Statistical Office (Eurostat), collected by El Faro de Ceuta. After Ukrainians (875,800), Moroccans are the nationality that obtained the most permits of this type.
Among EU countries, citizens from the North African country mainly choose France (more than 30 per cent), Spain (22 per cent) and Italy (17 per cent).
An estimated 31 million Moroccans or their descendants currently live on the continent, making Morocco the main recipient of remittances from Europe to Africa.
