Aumenta en un 65% el número de pasajeros en los aeropuertos marroquíes

Morocco is slowly trying to return to pre-pandemic normality. Following an increase in the rate of vaccinations, Morocco is experiencing the beginnings of what could be the Kingdom's economic recovery. In one of these sectors, Moroccan airports, hard hit by the consequences of the pandemic and severely limited by mobility restrictions, are experiencing a surge in traffic.

The National Airports Office (ONDA) revealed in its latest report that Moroccan airports had recorded an international commercial traffic volume of 3.5 million passengers. This volume would represent a recovery in the sector of 65%, compared to the same period in 2019.

Similarly, Moroccan airports reportedly received 31,202 international flights, which translates into a recovery rate of 77%. Specifically, Casablanca's Mohamed V airport received 1,457,154 international passengers, recovering 58% of the 2019 traffic. On the other hand, Marrakech airport, with 565,680, passengers would have registered a recovery rate of 46%, according to the same source.

Alongside this, other airports managed to exceed the traffic of 2019, particularly the airports of Tetouan, with 113% after, in the month of June, some 3,557 travellers passed through this airport, compared to 1,573 in the same month of the previous year, representing an increase of 126.13%. It was followed by Nador (127%), Tangiers (114%), Al Hoceima (106%) and Oujda (105%).

In this regard, during the month of August, international commercial traffic at national airports recovered 82% of passenger traffic in 2019, a figure that represents a rival with the countries of the Mediterranean basin, in particular with Spain (68%) and Turkey (76%), according to the Office.

They also estimate that this recovery has been achieved thanks to Operation Marhaba 2021, the reception of Moroccans living abroad, which began on 15 June and will end on 30 September.
