The Moroccan national airline Royal Air Maroc (RAM) achieved the double certification IEnvA (IATA Environmental Assessment) and IWT (IATA Illegal Wildlife Trade) for its continuous commitment to the environment and nature protection.

The first IEnvA certification is a programme designed to accompany the environmental action of airlines. Implemented on a voluntary basis, it certifies RAM's compliance with environmental obligations, its commitment to continuous improvement, as well as the environmental management and action processes implemented by the company. The company has indeed installed a management system to reduce energy and water consumption, as well as waste sorting and recycling at its facilities.

The second IWT label is a programme designed to strengthen airlines' collaboration with airports, postal services, government agencies and authorities to combat illegal air transport of endangered species. This falls within the broader framework of the Buckingham Palace Declaration, the international commitment against wildlife trafficking.

In this respect, RAM is committed to working actively in partnership with organisations that fight against the trafficking of protected species; adopting policies and procedures that discourage such trafficking and raise awareness among its passengers.

According to a statement from Royal Air Maroc, all measures involved in airline operations and aeronautical maintenance have been certified. The next step is to define a roadmap to obtain IEnvA certification in other areas such as catering and ground operations.

"The double IATA certification confirms RAM's strong commitment to environmental responsibility and action. The acquisition of the IEnvA and IWT certifications enhances the company's image and values both in Morocco and internationally," remarked Abdelhamid Addou, CEO of RAM.

Addou also underlined that this certification allows Royal Air Maroc to make a clear and voluntary commitment to the protection of the environment and the fight against the trafficking of protected species.

For his part, Kamil Alawadh, IATA's regional vice president for Africa and the Middle East, stated that "RAM's achievement of the IEnvA and IWT certifications demonstrates the company's commitment and work done to improve environmental management practices, combat poaching and the transport of endangered species; as well as promoting sustainability in general."
