Following the launch of Tanger Med 2 in January 2021, Tanger Med is experiencing significant growth compared to last year's figures. The revenues of the port located in the vicinity of the Strait of Gibraltar have recorded revenues of 1,459 million dirhams - just over 138 million euros - which represents a rise of 25% compared with the data for the first half of last year, according to data published this Monday by the Tanger Med Special Agency.

If only the data for the second quarter of the year are taken into account, the improvement compared to 2020 is even greater. In the second quarter of 2021, the turnover of the port division stands at 720 million dirhams - a figure close to 68 million euros - i.e. a growth of 34% compared to the second quarter of 2020. It is worth noting that a large part of this significant rise has come about thanks to the arrival of Tanger Med 2 which, despite having been on the market for only a short time, has managed to achieve a turnover of 474 million dirhams - almost 45 million euros -.

In terms of traffic, the port hub is maintaining a good pace as 52 million tonnes of goods were processed in 6 months. Of these 52 million tonnes, 28 million tonnes have been processed in the second half of the year. It should be borne in mind that these figures are only for the first half of the year and that 81 million tonnes were processed in the whole of 2020. With the data for the first half of the year, the projection for the whole of 2021 is very optimistic and expects to progressively continue a growth that is expected to maintain the trend in the next two quarters. Continued growth is one of the determining factors for future projects that have already been launched.

It should be noted that a merger project between TMPA (Tanger Med Port Authority) and Tanger Med 2 (TM2) is underway. The boards of TMPA and Tanger Med 2 have approved a swap ratio of 8.25 TM2 shares for one TMPAtanger share. The merger will be subject to the approval of the respective Extraordinary General Meetings of TMPA and TM2 and to the stabilisation of the improvement of the data published now at the end of June, to ensure that this is not a spontaneous growth victim of the rebound effect compared to the crisis that hit the whole world during the last year.

One of the recent events that does not favour the successful conclusion of these agreements is the arrest of a Spanish lorry driver in Tanger Med on Sunday 4 July. The man was loading a lorry with more than 850 kilos of hashish bound for the peninsula, according to an official communiqué issued by the Directorate General of National Security (DGSN). It also indicated that the individual was travelling "on board an international transport lorry with foreign number plates".
