The Movement Saharawi for Peace (MSP) has celebrated its recent incorporation into the Socialist International, which demonstrates that peace, freedom and democracy can be key to resolving the conflict in Western Sahara.

Below is the MSP statement:

Convened by the First Secretary, the Permanent Political Commission (CPP) of the Saharawi Movement for Peace (MSP) met with, among other issues, the recent decision of the Socialist International to admit the MSP as well as the preparations for the Third International Conference for Dialogue and Peace in Western Sahara on the agenda.

The CPP expressed its satisfaction with the decision of the recent Council of the Socialist International to admit the MSP and expressed its gratitude to the different political forces that voted in favour of the incorporation of the MSP into this organisation that brings together more than 130 political parties from all continents.

For the CPP this historic decision constitutes proof that the message of peace and the commitment to the values of freedom, democracy and a multi-party system are what can open the doors to a peaceful solution to the problem of Western Sahara in accordance with the recommendations of the UN Security Council regarding the need for a political settlement acceptable to the parties.

At the meeting the MSP agreed to intensify efforts for the success of the Third International Conference for Dialogue and Peace in Western Sahara that will take place at the end of next February.

The PSC of the MSP regretted that young Saharawis continue to lose their lives in an asymmetrical war that not only will not change the correlation of forces on the ground but will increase the pain of the families and hinder the political settlement of the problem. I therefore urge the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, Stefan de Mistura, to exercise his moral authority in a last-ditch effort to enforce the ceasefire.

Finally, the highest political authority of the Polisario Front launched an appeal to all Saharawis to join and support the Movement's commitment to a peaceful solution without winners or losers that will bring to an end the cycle of tragedy that began half a century ago.
