Abdellatif Hammouchi inaugurates the African Centre for Police Cooperation
Abdellatif Hammouchi, head of Morocco's General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) and General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST), presided over the inauguration of the African Centre for Police Cooperation, which will serve to coordinate security activities during the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (CAN).
Africa's top continental competition for national teams will be held in Morocco between 21 December and 18 January and will be a major sporting event, requiring significant security measures to ensure the smooth running of an event of this magnitude.
The inauguration ceremony for the African Centre for Police Cooperation was held in Salé, attended by Abdellatif Hammouchi and Nasser Bourita, Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, among other authorities.
Morocco will host the African Cup of Nations, and the African Centre for Police Cooperation will serve to coordinate the protection and security activities of the various security forces of African countries.
This dynamic highlights Morocco's leadership in police security and protection on the African continent, bearing in mind that it is also a very important player in this field on the international stage. In fact, various powers such as the United States, the United Kingdom and France cooperate with the Moroccan kingdom on security matters, as they consider it a strategic partner in this area due to its capacity and experience in combating organised crime, international terrorism and irregular migration.
The African Centre for Police Cooperation seeks to improve the efficiency of police and security collaboration through the exchange of information and work experience between the various police and security forces of African countries. It also aims to develop operational and technical coordination and to support the capacities of member states in the areas of police training and qualification.
This African Centre for Police Cooperation will undoubtedly serve to improve security in the territory in the run-up to such an important event as the African Cup of Nations, and also in view of future challenges for the Kingdom of Morocco, such as the organisation of a global sporting event like the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which it is co-organising with Spain and Portugal.
South-South cooperation
This dynamic is in line with the strengthening of South-South cooperation promoted by Morocco through the initiative proposed by King Mohammed VI.
The challenge is to promote collaboration between countries in the global South to foster greater development and prosperity in various areas. South-South cooperation is a basic feature of Morocco's foreign policy, focused on co-development, solidarity and the transfer of skills with African and Latin American countries, promoting investment, stability and regional integration, with special attention to sectors such as health, agriculture and security, leading initiatives in global forums for a more prosperous and cohesive “South”.
