Daesh launches attack on al-Assad positions in Syria

Despite the defeat of Daesh in 2019, the terrorist group continues to pose a dangerous threat to the region and the entire world. Since the victory of the international coalition against jihadism - led by the United States - members of the terrorist group have remained in the shadows organising and preparing new attacks.
Recently, Daesh launched a major attack on several positions controlled by the government of Bashar al-Assad located south and east of al-Sukhna in the governorate of Homs. According to local reports, this offensive has been carried out around the M20 national highway and targets a number of gas installations, including the strategically important Doubayat gas field.

Daesh has carried out this operation using multiple axes of attack, including approaches from the south, southeast and northeast. "The simultaneous attacks from different directions have put significant pressure on the Assad regime in al-Sukhna," local media report.
In response to this attack, Damascus has issued an emergency call for reinforcements. In this regard, the gravity of the situation has led Al-Assad to urgently seek additional troops and support to defend against the current offensive.

On the other hand, according to Baladi News, a media outlet opposed to the Syrian government, this attack has caused deaths among Syrian forces. The jihadists have also reportedly confiscated weapons and ammunition.
The jihadist offensive comes just weeks after a drone strike on a military academy in Damascus-controlled Homs. More than 110 people, including military personnel and civilians, were killed in the attack, one of the worst to hit the area controlled by President al-Assad since the war began in 2011.
Shortly after the attack on the military academy, Syrian forces shelled the rebel-held region of Idlib. Parts of this province are controlled by Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham, a terrorist group led by the former al-Qaeda branch in Syria that has in the past used drones to attack areas under government control.
