La embajadora marroquí regresa a España
Morocco responds to Spain's political shift on Western Sahara. After Madrid recognised the Moroccan plan as the "most serious, realistic and credible basis" for resolving the conflict in the region, Rabat has sent its ambassador back to Spain. Atalayar confirmed the return of Karima Benyaich, who said "it is a pleasure to be back among the Spanish people".
The diplomat left the country last May after the Alawi government recalled her for consultations over the diplomatic crisis caused by the entry into Spain of Polisario Front leader Brahim Ghali. However, Madrid's backing of the Moroccan plan for the Sahara puts an end to this crisis.
Rabat earlier responded to Spanish President Pedro Sánchez's decision in a Foreign Ministry statement in which it expressed its appreciation "for Spain's positive positions and productive engagements on the Moroccan Sahara issue".
Nasser Bourita's ministry also stressed a "bilateral partnership within the framework of the new bases and parameters, underlined in the Royal Speech of 20 August last".
In that speech, King Mohammed VI called for "the inauguration of a new stage in relations between our two countries, based on trust, transparency, mutual consideration and respect for commitments".
In addition to expressing its satisfaction with Madrid's decision, the Moroccan ministry announced a visit to Rabat scheduled for the end of March by Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares and President Sánchez.
