Morocco and Saudi Arabia confirm the good state of their diplomatic ties and their close cooperation in various fields.

One of the sectors in which the two Arab countries are working together is health, especially following the latest memorandum of cooperation signed between the two countries in Rabat with a view to strengthening collaboration in the field of health and social protection and to be prepared for possible pandemics and health crises.

The agreement was initialled by the Moroccan Minister of Health and Social Protection, Khalid Aït Taleb, and the Saudi Minister of Health, Fahad Bin Abdurrahman Al-Jalajel, and aims to strengthen the quality of health care, patient safety and the fight against pandemics and epidemics, including their early detection and the implementation of the necessary measures to control them. In addition, the memorandum of collaboration seeks to develop public health and preventive medicine, curative medicine, digital health and virtual medicine, as reported by Morocco's official news agency MAP.

This partnership will also explore possibilities for cooperation in the field of blood transfusion services in order to provide sufficient and safe blood in both countries.

The terms of this memorandum will be implemented through the exchange of information and experience, the exchange of visits of experts and specialists, the organisation of conferences and seminars, and training in the field of health. Scientific research in the field of health and medicine and the exchange of information in the fields of medicine and telemedicine will also be promoted.

At the meeting between the Moroccan and Saudi health ministers, the Moroccan kingdom presented the national health system reform initiatives implemented under the instructions of King Mohammed VI, particularly in terms of social protection and universal health coverage, as well as the pharmaceutical and vaccine industry. Morocco's pharmaceutical industry is the second largest in Africa in terms of turnover, with a turnover of around 15 billion dirhams (around 1.4 billion euros).

Morocco's interest in its health system and national health coverage has been very relevant under the reign of Mohammed VI. In fact, during the last coronavirus pandemic, which hit the world globally with many fatalities, the Moroccan kingdom established a rigorous system of protection and control that protected the population to the maximum and also a remarkable vaccination system that reached all social scales, within a dynamic of cooperation with other nations in this vaccination mechanism, which was very important at the global level to tackle a health crisis as strong as the one suffered with COVID-19.

Recently, faced with the threat of a new monkeypox health crisis, the Minister of Health and Social Protection, Khalid Aït Taleb, held a meeting with the scientific committee to review the evolution of the epidemiological situation of monkeypox (Mpox) at national and international level.

This meeting was part of the measures taken by the Kingdom of Morocco to assess the epidemiological situation, as indicated by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection in an official communiqué.

During this meeting, the effectiveness of the epidemiological surveillance system adopted by Morocco was examined and evaluated, according to the Ministry, noting that this system has proven effective in the early detection of imported cases and ensures immediate and effective intervention.
