The Moroccan government acknowledged today that the war between Russia and Ukraine will have an impact on the prices of wheat it imports, since most of it comes from there, but assured that there will be no disruption in the supply of this product on domestic markets.

"There will be an impact on prices, but that will not affect the supply of our market. The government will bear the cost of this price bill," Moroccan government spokesman Mustafa Baitas said today at a press conference following the Governing Council.

Baitas assured that the Government made an effort to import large quantities of this basic cereal in the Moroccan diet, which he did not specify, between January and February, which, he said, will reinforce the volume of storage of the country's granaries.

The minister reacted to questions from journalists on the impact of the current context marked by the rise in commodity prices on the purchasing power of Moroccans and specifically the rise in prices of wheat, imported mostly from Ukraine and Russia and whose crops in Morocco are endangered by drought.

Baitas recalled that the government is also subsidizing other products heavily consumed by Moroccans, giving the example of electricity with 14 billion dirhams (1.3 billion euros) "to spare Moroccans a 40% rise in their electricity bill," he added.

He also cited butane gas with 18 billion dirhams (1.6 billion euros) and 3 billion dirhams (283 million euros) for drinking water.

The Moroccan Ministry of Economy assured this week that the price of bread will be maintained at a cheap level of 1.20 dirhams (0.11 euros) per loaf thanks to a series of measures such as the suspension of import tariffs on wheat, in addition to subsidies on the import of soft wheat of 83 dirhams (7.7 euros) per 100 kilos imported.
